Password protection adds an access step to a short link. Instead of going directly to the destination, visitors must enter the password you set.
Plan requirement. Password-protected links are available on the Premium plan.
Protect a new link
- Open Links and select Create link.
- Enter the destination address and configure the link as usual.
- Open the advanced settings and select Password.
- Enter the password visitors should use.
- Confirm the password setting, then create the link.
The link card displays a lock when password protection is enabled.
Add or change a password
- Open Links and edit the appropriate link.
- Select Password in the advanced settings.
- Enter the new password and confirm the setting.
- Save the link.
The short address does not change. Anyone opening it must use the new password after your changes are saved.
Remove password protection
Edit the link, select the clear button beside Password, and save your changes. Visitors can then open the destination without entering a password.
Share a protected link
Send the short link and password separately when possible. Before sharing it broadly, open the link in a private browser window and confirm that the password prompt appears and the password works.
Security tip. Use a password that is difficult to guess and different from your Umela account password. Change it when someone should no longer have access.
Password protection controls access to the redirect, but it does not encrypt or restrict the destination page itself. If the destination contains sensitive information, use that service's own access controls as well.
